About

Welcome to Davis Library’s InfoLit Blog!

“InfoLit” is short for Information Literacy, which is also commonly and more simply referred to as “IL.”

So, what is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is defined as the ability “to recognize when information is needed and to have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information” (Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. Final Report. American Library Association, 1989.)

And, why is Information Literacy important?

Skills learned through the academic research process are the same skills needed to become information literate.  Becoming a lifelong learner, knowing how to think critically, use information ethically and conduct self-directed studies on wide range of topics, is vital to your success not only as a student, but also in the workplace and your personal life.

Today’s employers are looking for individuals who can easily deal with change and work effectively with others.  A “spirit of inquiry” is also desirable as asking questions and exploring multiple viewpoints help to spark new ideas and innovative ways to resolve problems.  Honesty and integrity are characteristics not only valued highly in individual relationships, but also on the job as social responsibility and “doing the right thing” are economic necessities to surviving in a globalized marketplace.
