"Keep Davis Library Dangerous" Banned Books Week Display
Founded in 1982, Banned Books Week stresses the significant role our First Amendment rights play in maintaining a free and open democratic society.  The primary focus of Banned Book Week campaigns are aimed at drawing attention to the dangers of censorship. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community—librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types—in support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Once again, everyone is invited to join the Friends of the Davis Library to read-out, eat-out, and commemorate the occasion. If you have any questions? Don’t hesitate to “Ask Us!

Yes! School is Back in Session…

Yes! School is back in session at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. With the first month of classes in full swing, Davis Library has been keeping up with and participating in all the busy activities on campus.

In addition to all the library orientation and instruction sessions, Davis Library is also promoting and hosting a number of literature-based social activities on campus this month.

This weekend, the French Art Colony’s Riverby Theatre Guild is performing Emma! A Pop Musical at the Alphus R. Christensen Theatre in the university’s Berry Fine & Performing Arts Center. A modern-day take on Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma, the romantic comedy play features hit songs of legendary girl groups and iconic female singers.

Written nearly two centuries ago, Emma still continues to be popular.  Actually, it has inspired several stage, cinema and television adaptations in recent years as well as other novels.

Jane Austen is one of England’s most famous authors although she never gained any public recognition for her writings during her lifetime. Austen published her work anonymously since female authors were discouraged in the early 19th century.

To help promote Emma! A Pop Musical, Davis Library has put up a special display of Jane Austen and Emma-related works on the Library’s Main Floor. The musical is being directed by Minda Hager, part-time/temporary Library Assistant at the Davis Library.

Show-times for this event are 8 PM Thursday 9/17 & Friday 9/18; and 3 PM Sunday 9/20. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door. Rio Grande students enrolled in LA10001 Gateway to Success are eligible for FREE admission and can earn class credit for their attendance. Contact Davis Library at 1.800.282.7201, ext. 7005 or refdesk@rio.edu for more details.

Another event happening at the Davis Library this month is the first meeting of a new campus book club. Jonathan Simmons, English adjunct faculty member, is organizing the group. The new book club’s first meeting will be Thursday 9/24 from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM on the Davis Library’s Main Floor. The Friends of the Davis Library are providing light refreshments to help celebrate and support the club’s inauguration.

The first book the group will be reading and discussing is The Circle by Dave Eggers. While Davis Library does not yet have a copy of this title available in its collections, you will be able to borrow a copy via the OhioLINK Library Catalog or SearchOhio services. A dystopian thriller that explores how social media and other emerging technologies can threaten our civil liberties—particularly with regard to privacy, look for The Circle to be adapted for the silver screen soon. A major motion picture based on the novel is due for release sometime in 2016 and stars both Emma Watson and Tom Hanks

"See the Film - Read the Book" Display @ Davis Library
Literature inspiring film is also the subject of another small book display we are featuring on the Davis Library's Main Floor to help promote the One Rio, One World, Many Voices: Multicultural Film Series being offered on campus throughout the 2015-2016 academic year. Several of the movies being shown originated in book form. If seeing the film makes you want to read the book, or if you want to read the book before seeing the film, then Davis Library can help!
