Another (Homecoming) Viewpoint

View of Davis Library's Grounds around 3 PM Friday 11.15.13

Homecoming Weekend is here at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College and as you can see in the photo above the folks from Allen Hall—not too far from Davis Library—have been busy readying their float for this afternoon’s parade. (See photo below.)

Since year’s Homecoming theme is “Decade of Dreams,” which reflects both the institution’s long history and future plans, we’re also featuring a few pictures from Davis Library’s early days.  The building was dedicated January 16, 1966.

Rio Grande College itself was founded in 1876.  During the 1970s the community college was added and by the late 1980s the curriculum and campus was expanded to make the school an officially accredited university.

Then, a few details on Jeanette Albiez Davis, the library’s namesake, may also be found at:

Learn Another Language & Get Another Viewpoint of the World Around You

View of Davis Library's Grounds around 3:45 PM Thursday 11.7.13

During the Spring 2014 Semester here at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College a special learning opportunity for those individuals wanting study a new language and culture is being offered.

The university’s Madog Center for Welsh Studies is adding Welsh I - WSH 11103 to the course schedule.  The class will meet in the Davis Library classroom (DL205) on Tuesday evenings from 6-8:50 PM and run from mid-January until early-May.

The primary focus of the course will be on conversational Welsh with emphasis on developing communication skills for everyday situations.  In addition to promoting fluency in the language, the class also aims to create a greater understanding and appreciation for Welsh heritage and contemporary Welsh culture.

The Welsh language is Celtic in origin and native to the country of Wales, which is located on the island of Great Britain, borders England and is part of the United Kingdom.  Emigrants from Wales began settling in southeast Ohio in the early 1800s and their legacy has played a significant role in the local area’s history and development.

Welsh I - WSH 11103 is designed to make learning a new language an enjoyable experience.  The class is highly recommended to those interested in applying for the university’s 2014 Fall Welsh Exchange Program, a partnership between Rio Grande and the University of Wales-Trinity Saint David  in Carmarthen, Wales which gives our students an opportunity to travel and study abroad.

In addition to the course offering and exchange program, the Madog Center also sponsors a number of other programs and projects both on and off campus.

Coming up next week, the Madog Center and the Friends of the Davis Library will be hosting an event featuring filmmaker and poet Susanne Iuppa of North Wales and her latest book On Track, Poems from Welsh Pilgrimage.

The program, which will take place at 1 PM on Thursday, November 14, 2013 in the Davis University Center Board Room, is free and open to the public. (See Campus Map (#26) for location and directions.)

For more details on the Madog Center’s activities, please contact Jeanne Jones Jindra, Director of the Madog Center for Welsh Studies, at 1.800.282.7201, extension 7186 or welsh@rio.edu.

Both the Davis Library and the Madog Center offer a number of books and other resources relevant to various aspects of Welsh culture and history.  If you’d like to learn more about what our institution has to offer, please don’t hesitate to “Ask Us!
