Exploring Nursing Resources @ Davis Library

Last week was National Nurses Week (NNW), an annual celebration of the many contributions nurses make in improving our quality of life.  This week-long event is held each year from May 6-12.

"Happy Birthday Flo!"  May 12th is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth and the date International Nurses Day is celebrated each year.  Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nursing.  The books pictured here are from Davis Library's General Collection are Florence Nightingale, 1820-1920 by Cecil Woodham Smith and Notes on Nursing: What It Is, and What It Is Not by Florence Nightingale.
So, to show our appreciation for all nurses and nursing students “out there” we’re going to feature over the next couple of weeks some key nursing resources available to Rio Grande students, faculty and staff via Davis Library’s participation in OhioLINK, a state-wide library and information sharing network serving Ohio’s academic community.

The online resources highlighted in these blog postings are relevant to wide range of health care-related fields and support the curriculum for the Holzer School of Nursing here at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College (URG/RGCC).

Holzer School of Nursing is located in McKenzie Hall on URG/RGCC Main Campus

From the OhioLINK Databases page, you can view all databases Listed by Subject and use the Nursing link to access the recommended databases for that subject area.  The top item listed will be the main focus of our discussion today.

The first item CINAHL, which stands for the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, is the premier database for nursing research.  Through OhioLINK services, Davis Library has access to CINAHL Plus with Full-Text, a tool that offers the world’s most comprehensive coverage of both nursing and allied health studies with detailed information dating back to 1937.

This database not only provides access to the full-the text of hundreds of authoritative journals articles but also indexes a wide range of other well-respected publications and learning materials including Continuing Education Modules and Evidence-Based Care Sheets (EBCS).

EBSCO Publishing, Inc. produces CINAHL Plus with Full-Text, which utilizes the EBSCOhost platform to deliver its online content.  You might already be familiar with the EBSCOhost platform as it employed by number of other research databases offered through OhioLINK.

For example, Academic Search Complete, a general all-purpose database applicable to a number of subject fields that is introduced to our students in their first-year composition courses, operates using this same system.

To get a quick look at how this EBSCOhost platform works in OhioLINK, see our Finding Articles @ Davis Library video tutorial at:  http://youtu.be/ZwkH6sUHaug

For detailed instruction on using CINAHL Plus with Full-Text, see the video tutorial provided below from the EBSCO Publishing YouTube Channel  found at:  http://www.youtube.com/user/ebscopublishing/featured

This tutorial gives instruction on doing basic searches.  The EBSCO CINAHL Support Center also offers access to additional tutorials and help-guides that cover more advanced search methods.  Visit:  http://support.epnet.com/cinahl/

Don’t forget!  OhioLINK Databases require you to authenticate for off-campus use.  Watch our video tutorial below on how to complete this process or see it at: http://youtu.be/Vw4SKq6JHF0

Then, please come back again next week when we take a closer look at another nursing-related EBSCOhost database—Health Source:  Nursing/Academic Edition.
