View of Davis Library around 3:45 PM Monday 4.15.15 |
We're still celebrating the arrival of spring here at the
University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community
College. It's that time of year when the ground-keeping crew is busier than
usual making sure we look good on the outside. And, it's that time of year when
Davis Library is busier not only
helping students complete research assignments and prepare for final exams, but
also with some of its favorite outreach activities.
April 12-18 is
National
Library Week (NLW), an annual event sponsored by the
American Library Association (ALA) that draws
attention to the valuable role libraries, librarians and other library workers
play in their community. This year, the same week is used by the
National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC) to celebrate the
Week
of the Young Child (WOYC), an annual event honoring young children as well
as their educators and caregivers. Then, the whole month of April is recognized
as
National Poetry
Month, which was founded by the
Academy of
American Poets in 1996.
To acknowledge all of these occasions, Davis Library put up some special
displays on the library’s
Main Floor. A small
exhibit of artwork created preschool-aged children attending the
Rio GrandeChild Development Center now hangs near the Davis Library’s Juvenile
Collection, which offers both Children and Young Adult Literature books. Close-by
is a small display of poetry books for children, many of which are award-winning
titles.
Across the way is another display of poetry books. This time, the books
featured our from our General Collection, items available for check-out that
are normally located in the “2
nd Floor Stacks” area on the library’s
Top Floor.
This particular display offers information on an upcoming
Poetry Café &
Coffee House program being presented by the
Friends of the
Davis Library and the university’s
Acting I (THR 12302) class.
This “Open Mike” event begins around 10
a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015 and everyone is welcome to come drink coffee and
share their favorite poems with us.
Need a poem to read? No problem. We have one last display on the floor
featuring more poetry books from our General Collection and also a “Poetree”
filled with bookmarks each of which have different poem by a famous poets
printed on it. Feel free to take and keep a bookmark with you.
