Whole New (It’s Almost Halloween!) View

View of Davis Library around 10 AM Wednesday 10.29.14

With Halloween approaching fast, the Davis Library at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College is continuing its celebration of the fall season by featuring an All Hallows Read display featuring a wide variety of spooky books and stories that are available in the Davis Library’s collections.

All Hallows Read is a recent movement among reading enthusiasts and booksellers to encourage book-giving on Halloween. Research has shown that reading for pleasure is beneficial to the mental and physical well-being of both children and adults—a longer lasting treat than any piece of candy.

In addition to Davis Library’s book display, last week the Friends of the Davis Library hosted a special ghost stories event featuring students enrolled in the university’s theatre department classes as well as professional storyteller Frank McGarvey from Columbus, Ohio. A few photos from that event are posted here and also on the Davis Library’s Facebook Page found at:  www.facebook.com/jadavislibrary

Some of the tales told at that event originated from local folklore. Consequently, Davis Library added a few new titles to its collection (see list below) that detail weird or scary stories from the Ohio Appalachian Region. These books are now on display at the Davis Library and are available for checked-out to our library users.

Enjoy a Happy and Safe Halloween!

Whole New (Telling Ghosts Stories) View

View of Davis Library around 9 AM Thursday 10.16.14

It’s a gray rainy day here at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. With Halloween around the corner and the fall foliage nearing peak color conditions, Davis Library is preparing itself for a little Trick-or-Treat action to distract from that all-to-gloomy notion of “winter is coming.”

National Friends of Libraries Week, an annual celebration of those groups and organizations who help support their local libraries, takes place next week—October 19-25, 2014. To honor the occasion and delight in the festive autumn season, the Friends of the Davis Library will host a special storytelling event beginning around 10 AM on Thursday, October 23rd on the Davis Library’s Main Floor.
S’more Fun!—Indoor Campfire will feature ghost stories and other weird tales as performed by students from the university’s theatre department and professional storyteller Frank McGarvey of Columbus, Ohio.

Free and open to the public, Rio Grande students enrolled in LA100 Gateway to Success may earn class credit for their attendance. Friends will provide light refreshments as an added spooktacular treat.
